About SSEF

The Steel Structures Education Foundation (SSEF) is a special initiative of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction. Its mandate is to develop and support Steel related research and education in Schools of Engineering and Architecture across Canada.

ORGANIZATION

The Steel Structures Education Foundation (SSEF) was incorporated in December 1985. Membership is open to any organization or individual interested in advancing the application and use of steel in structures, through education.

ADMINISTRATION

A Board of Governors directs the work of the SSEF. Governors are elected from among the sponsors of the Foundation and from among distinguished individuals from the construction community invited to sit on the Board. Mr. Rob Third, is Chairman of the Board of Governors. The Executive Director is Mr. David MacKinnon, P.Eng., and Ms. Laura Knetsch is the Administrative contact.

OBJECTIVES

  • To provide financial support, through programmes such as University Research Grants, and education opportunities for under-graduate and postgraduate students, in engineering and architecture, to learn modern steel design and construction technology.
  • To provide continuing education opportunities for practising engineers, architects, contractors and educators to upgrade their knowledge of the practical and economical application of steel design and construction technology.
  • To disseminate information to owners, builders, developers, architects, engineers, project managers, quantity surveyors and others with respect to the advantages of using steel in construction.
  • To encourage practising engineers, technologists and educators to organize and participate in regional educational meetings and the preparation and dissemination of a technical journal.
  • To generally advance the application and use of steel.
