SSEF Resources

The Steel Structures Education Foundation is dedicated to creating and distributing teaching resources to both educators and students across Canada. We are attempting to create a diverse set of "tools" to help both Architectural and Engineering students understand better the potential and reality of designing and constructing in steel. Some of these materials are availabe "online" through this website. Others are available either free or for a nominal charge simply by contacting the Foundation.

CASE STUDIES on DVD

SSEF continues to develop and release a series of interactive case studies on DVD that examine the design, fabrication and construction of a series of innovative steel buildings from across Canada. Volume 1 looks at the design and construction of BCE Place, by Architect Santiago Calatrava, as well as the moment frame AESS tree structure at the Vancouver International Airport by Architecture (now Stantec). Volume 2 looks at the Vancouver Skytrain Stations that characterize the new Millennium Line. Volume 3, currently in its development phase, will look at the work of Star Architects Will Alsop (OCAD), Norman Foster (Leslie Dan) and Daniel Libeskind (ROM). The DVD features both images and video of the buildings, including steel erection shots of the new addition to the ROM.  (more...)

CASE STUDY PROJECT GALLERY

The case study gallery is an online selection of some of the fabrication, construction, erection and finished images from the buildings that we have examined in our series of interactive case studies. Here you can preview the type of material that the case studies address in much greater depth, as well as have a sneak peek at the content of future case studies not yet released. (more...)

VIDEOS ON STEEL CONSTRUCTION

Produced by the Steel Structures Education Foundation primarily for use in universities and colleges teaching architecture, structural engineering and building science, these educational videos will also be of interest to designers, contractors, developers and building authorities – available from the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction. (more...)

STEEL TEACHING AIDS

Steel teaching aids have been erected at many Schools of Engineering across Canada. These have been donated either by individual CISC Members, or through the efforts of the CISC Region. (more...)

SSEF EDUCATOR'S KIT

Full time faculty in Schools of Engineering and Architecture should contact SSEF to receive their free "educator's kit". (more...)

LINKS

Through our "links page", SSEF will connect you to a variety of steel resources, image and case study galleries, information about green steel buildings, web sites, articles and general information to assist with your understanding and appreciation of steel design. (more...)

SUSTAINABLE STEEL

With ever increasing concern about our fragile environment, the steel industry is interested in educating both students and pracitioners about the green value of using steel in buildiing projects.

Different steel structural systems can help to make a building lighter and more material efficient. Steel can be recycled endlessly, assisting in "Cradle to Cradle" notions of limitless life cycles of material used in building. Steel never needs to be thrown away...
