POTEAUX MIXTES ÉTUDE COMPARATIVE DES NORMES
SUMMARY
A parametric study was performed on composite columns in order to compare the design provisions of four standards: the Canadian Standard (CAN/CSA S16-01), the European Code (prEN: 1994-1-1: 2004), the American Specification (LRFD-1999) and a preliminary version of the new American Standard (LRFD-2005). A finite layer model was also developed to investigate the adequacy of design specifications. Finally, the standards strength predictions were compared with tests results from previous researchers.
From these comparisons, it can be concluded that the Canadian Standard is appropriate to predict the compressive resistance and bending resistance of composite columns. However, in some cases Standard S16 was found unsafe when composite columns had to resist both bending moments and axial compression. A modification to column strength interaction equation was suggested in order to correct this anomaly. Moreover, design provisions were proposed for cases not covered in the Canadian Standard. A column strength interaction equation was proposed for encased and partially encased composite columns.
