Description
PARTIALLY ENCASED COMPOSITE COLUMNS
SUMMARY
A comprehensive study was conducted to investigate the short-term and long-term behavior and strength of partially encased composite columns made with thin-walled welded I sections, stiffened with transverse links. The research presented the experimental response of square 300 mm, 450 mm and 600 mm stub-column specimens. Finite element models were also developped and represented adequately the experimental results. Proposed design equations based on this research are now included in standard CAN/CSA S16-01.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Since receiving the G.J. Jackson Fellowship in 1999, Thierry completed his Ph.D. degree in 2001 from Ecole Polytechnique de Montréal. He then pursued his carrier at SNC-Lavalin in Montreal as a bridge design engineer until 2006. He is currently employed by Buckland & Taylor in Vancouver and is still working in the field of bridge engineering. Thierry may be contacted at tchicoine@b-t.com
